GovPayNet, a government processor of debit and credit payments, has been purchased by prison and inmate technology giant, Securus Technologies. The deal was announced by Securus on January 4, 2018 and will make them the largest company of its kind in North America. The deal allows for GovPayNet to remain operating under that name and the company will continue to be headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. It currently provides payment processing for over 3,500 government agencies to include jails, county tax offices, traffic fines and fees, and other payments. Its market share covers over 26% of counties in the United States.
Securus Technologies was founded in Dallas, Texas in 1986 and has three other regional offices in the United States. The company provides payment processing, inmate self-service, biometric analysis, incident management, emergency management, and other technological services to over 2,600 agencies and corrections facilities in North America. The company employees over 1,000 employees nationwide. The acquisition of GovPayNet will allow the company to process over 4 million payments annually. Over the past decade, Securus has acquired more than 20 technology companies in order to boost its clientele and services it provides. The CEO of Securus Technologies is Bob Pickens and GovPayNet is led by Mark MacKenzie.
