Securus Technologies has been a front-runner in criminal technology for many years. The company specializes in investigation, public safety, corrections and modern communication. Their expertise has been used to solve complicated matters such as inmate-on-inmate crimes as well. Securus Technologies is based in Dallas, Texas. It has served with various types of corrections agencies, public safety organizations and law enforcement bureaus around the country. They provide emergency response, public information, biometric analysis, communication, information management and inmate self service. Securus Technologies is dedicated to making the world a safer place with their products.
Securus specializes in prison technologies within the United States. The company was founded in 1986. They have offices in Texas and Atlanta, Georgia. Securus technologies employs more than a thousand people and has over 2,600 contracts with correctional facilities around the United States. The company has invested more than 600 million dollars in patents and acquisitions over the past 3 years. Securus acquired Offender Management Systems in 2007. Offender Management had been the leader in the industry up until that point.
Securus Technologies introduced a system that allowed correctional facilities to control the problem with cell phone contraband. The system had been approved by at least 5 Department of Corrections facilities by 2016. They later partnered with Harris Corporation on Cell Defender Technology. The wireless containment solution was developed to prevent cell phones from connecting to outside mobile networks. This was introduced in 2017.
Securus Technologies went on to acquire JPay Incorporated. JPay Inc. is a top technology company which has a highly functional electronic payments, email and entertainment system for correctional facilities. It has contracts with more than 33 state prisons nationwide. The move diversified Securus Technologies’ business model. They are now able to offer every type of technical logical software that is needed for correctional facilities to run their operation.
The merger between Securus Technologies and JPay was designed to expand the reach of both companies. Securus had been paying close attention to the success of the JPay business model. They intend to allow JPay Inc. to operate as an independent subsidiary. In the meantime they will be able to take advantage of Securus Technologies’ tremendous library of resources.
Gang violence in our prison has been on the rise recently, and my superiors had seen enough and wanted a change. The minute the threats put visitors, guests, and staff in harm’s way, we knew that changes were coming. We were informed that we would be getting a new resource in the battle to keep the gang violence in check, and it came from a very unlikely source I have to admit.
In the past, we have checked the inmates mail, monitored them inside the visitor center, and even done cell inspections daily, but the problem persists. The company that was going to help us to clean up the jail is called Securus Technologies, and their system was being installed sooner than we expected. Their inmate call monitoring system is currently in thousands of jails around the country, allowing corrections officers to get some control on the exploding gang populations.
The company is run by CEO Richard Smith, and has over a thousand employees who are all dedicated to the company objective of making the world safer. The LBS software was going to make our job as officers easier because it would allow us to be on other fronts while it scanned all the calls for anything gang related. The results that we experienced in the first week were nothing short of spectacular.
In only a few hours after we all learned how the software worked, we were alerted to a call between an inmate and the gang soldiers on the street. He was directing them how to get contraband past the guards in the visitor center to hand to his brothers. One call even revealed how orders were handed down the ranks so lower-level gang members could carry out hits on rival gangs in the jail. We can now take action before these incidents are allowed to happen.
A definite issue for American businesses is to provide reliable information on patents for their products. A great deal of time is normally spent on research and development of products, in order to create high quality items for customers to use and enjoy. When these patents are in danger it is not good for business and can actually be the difference between whether or a company weakens or strengthens. Securus Technologies is a good example of a corporation that deals with these issues, and has recently been under fire through online media coverage thanks to accusations being placed on the information technology company by a competitor in their field, GTL. These accusations claim that Securus is currently operating under expired patent codes for its products. This means that, under law, Securus would need to release their products to the open market within the United States so that other companies can use them for their own personal capital gain. After considering their options Securus Technologies, along with the assistance of third party organizations, have performed high levels of research in order to come to the final decision that these claims are baseless and hold no weight.
Securus Technologies provides ample and dedicated support to its customers, who are primarily incarcerated individuals currently serving time within the United States prison system. These inmates are generally ignored when it comes to providing them with quality products and services, and this, in my opinion, is a tragedy. Securus offers them the same quality services as they would anyone, and this is a testament to their personal quest to offer the best in customer service no matter who the customer may be. Thanks to these accusations by GTL being put to rest, Securus will continue to offer these support systems to the needy.
All of us who have ever had a loved one incarcerated in a jail or prison can attest to the many difficulties communicating with your loved ones can be. With the rigid schedules most institutions adhere to and logistical problems of trying to get to the institution for visits can be challenging. Beyond that, many times a phone call just doesn’t feel like its enough.
Sharing those special moments in life like children’s birthdays, holidays, anniversary or even sporting events can make your incarcerated loved ones feel more involved with their families lives and raise their spirits. Watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4ECpybr_7s.
With that in mind Securus Technologies recently launched their Securus Video Visitation App for Android and Apple devices. The app which launched for Android in February and according to PR Newswire has already been downloaded more 60,000 times. The Apple device version has been downloaded nearly 5000 times.
Russell Roberts, Vice President of Marketing and Strategy at Securus Technologies is quoted saying “Securus’ Video Visit mobile app represents another way we Serve and Connect, connecting family and friends with an easier, more convenient way to visit their incarcerated loved ones. Until recently, family and friends who wanted to connect with their loved ones had no choice in how they participated in phone calls or visits, so we made the investment necessary to bring more options to the visitation process. Our Securus Video Visit app brings the mobility consumers are familiar with to the rigidness of jails and prisons – making inmate phone calls and visitation more convenient for everyone involved.”
